The fund honors his life of devotion to helping others, and his loyalty to the community. Contributions were used to establish a permanent scholarship endowment fund for students at Avery County High School. Working at the Crossnore School as a teacher, coach and house parent, Pop became to many a father figure, teaching the boys right from wrong and instilling in them values to help guide them through life.In 1999, friends and former students of Pop's created a scholarship fund in his name. When Pop first visited the town of Crossnore in 1948, he saw a great need to help the children of this small mountain community.
